Those with the habit of clenching and grinding their teeth even when not eating can of course hasten the process.

Tooth wear is not only a consequence of aging it also adds to our outward appearance of growing old. As tooth height is lost the dimensions of the face change.

The lower third of the face tends to collapse relative to the remainder. This causes the skin and muscle to sag and so the jowls are exaggerated; lines and wrinkles appear.

The joint between the lower jaw and the skull (TMJ) can also become distorted and you may experience a 'clicking' sensation. This may sometimes be accompanied by any or some of the following:

• Difficulty biting or chewing
• Dull, aching pain in the face
• Earache
• Headache
• Migraine
• Neck and shoulder pain
