In a root resection we remove one of the roots of a multi-rooted tooth.
In preparation for this procedure we must first complete a normal root canal treatment.
Once this has been done we will make an incision in the gum to expose the roots of the tooth.
We then separate the root from the rest of the tooth and remove it.
The area is rinsed with sterile saline solution and then sutured closed.
The tooth itself is then repaired by a temporary filling or crown as appropriate.
Following this procedure we may give you antibiotics, painkillers and an anti-microbial mouthwash.
You may have some discomfort and swelling, and possibly light bleeding, for the next 24 to 48 hours. Avoid chewing with the tooth until the stitches are removed (7 to 10 days).
We will carry out post-operative checks on your gums throughout the remainder of your stay with us. Once your gums have healed, we can complete your treatment with either a permanent filling or crown.
