Following a root canal treatment it may be possible to restore the tooth with a composite filling material if it is a front tooth and the cavity is small, but back teeth in many cases will need a crown.
We need to prepare the tooth for the crown by building-up a foundation (or core) to strengthen it and support the crown. We may achieve this by using a post. We remove some of the root filling material and the cement a metal rod into the root canal.
There are two types of post and the choice of which to use will depend on the tooth being treated. Prefabricated posts can be used on rear teeth, but when treating front teeth custom made ‘cast posts’ are usually necessary.
These will therefore require two sessions of treatment to complete: one to prepare the tooth and create an impression of the post space, and the second to cement the post into tooth. Once this has been done we can move on to the final phase in this process and take impressions so that our laboratory can custom make a new crown for use to cement into place.
