What Are Dental Implants?
Dental Implants are used to replace teeth that have been lost. More precisely they are artificial roots that are placed into the jaw bones. They then provide anchorage for a post (Abutment) that is inserted into the implant and a crown which is fixed onto the post.
Advantages of Dental Implants
Once you are used to your implants they look and feel exactly like having your own teeth back again. In fact it can be even better than that. Your new crowns won't decay or discolour and we can replace what might have been crooked or misshapen teeth with straight even ones that would do credit to a movie star!
Implants cause none of the discomfort and soreness experienced by people you wear normal false teeth. There will be no foods out of bounds to you. There are no plates to trap food particles and nothing to spoil the taste of your food. No one will know what you have had done no matter how much you laugh.
Once they have been fitted implants require only the same care as normal teeth - brushing and flossing.
Importantly they will help prevent the bone loss that normally arises when teeth are lost. This can lead to a partial collapse of the lower part of the face. It is this that causes many of the most apparent signs of aging.
Are Implants Suitable for Everyone?
There are very few medical conditions that make having dental implants inadvisable, but bone loss is something that can increase costs. We loose bone from our jaws as the result of loosing teeth or periodontal disease. We have techniques to deal with bone loss but if we have to undertake grafting or guided bone regeneration then that would cost extra.
Periodontal disease is probably the most common complication we face in setting an implant. If disease is allowed to enter the jaw bone at the implant site then implant failure is probable. When periodontal disease is a factor we need to treat and eradicate it first.
Similarly smoking is something that has been shown to play a significant part in the failure of dental implants. We must therefore insist that patients quit the habit before attending of implantation.
Are Dental Implants Reliable?
This procedure has been around since the mid 1960s and is still working effectively in many of the patients who had them fitted back then. As with all technologies, there has been a great deal of development since then and this is now a well understood stable and routine procedure.
Professor Szabo fitted his first implant in 1978 and has kept at the forefront of developments in this. At the Heviz clinic the Professor specialises in complex implant surgery for patients from across the globe.
How long do implants last?
We guarantee the implants we fit for five years, but the serviceable life of an implant is usually far longer.
Implantation is a permanent way of restoring your missing teeth. It actually makes a stronger bond with your jawbone than the roots of your natural teeth.
However, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene as periodontal disease can be as harmful as it is to your natural roots
