Your bone and gum tissue should fit snugly around your teeth like a turtleneck around your neck. When you have severe periodontal disease , this supporting tissue and bone is destroyed. Eventually, if too much bone is lost, the teeth will need to be extracted.

 

However a regenerative procedure can be performed. During this operation membranes, bone grafts or tissue-stimulating proteins can be used to encourage your body's natural ability to regenerate bone. Augmentation helps to repair damage caused by the progression of periodontal disease.

In order to withstand the dynamic forces teeth encounter in everyday use they do need to be securely anchored in the jaw bone.
